In our women in coding program, women can learn to code right in their own homes. We are focusing on JavaScript and Python, two of the most common computer languages sought by employers. Once mastered, these languages not only improve their likelihood of employability, but allow them to work remotely. As the global economy continues to move towards digitization - more than 50% of jobs require some computer training - we want to help empower refugee women's access to the market. Our coding program officially launched on February 13. We have a class of six girls this term, located in Syria, Turkey and Canada. The girls meet twice per week as a group to receive instruction from Sarah Geselowitz, the program director, who is based in New York. The girls have also been matched with individual mentors, who assist them with homework and additional questions outside of the class. At the end of the course, the girls will each build their own websites in an effort to help them build online portfolios.
