abair.ie originated from the university research project Cabóigín I. That project's goal was to develop a full-fledged Text-to-Speech synthesis system for Irish and was funded by Foras na Gaeilge. The first synthetic voice that was developed was called Cabóigín, an Ulster Irish voice (Gweedore). The person in charge of the project is Prof Ailbhe Ní Chasaide from the Phonetics and Speech Laboratory, School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences (CLCS), Trinity College, Dublin.

Launched in July 2015 and based in Dubai, U.A.E., the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education (AGFE) was established to improve access to quality education for high-achieving underserved Emirati and Arab youth. Abdulla Al Ghurair pledged one third of his wealth to the Foundation and set out a target of reaching 15,000 youth over the next 10 years via secondary and higher education programs and scholarships in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) valued at over $1 billion. Through its programs, the Foundation is devoted to creating the next generation of leaders and citizens; equipping Arab youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill their promise and empowering them to write the new Arab Story. The Foundation offers a range of full scholarships both online and face-to-face to support Syrian, and other Arab, displaced and refugee youth access quality education degree programs and credentials in the fields of STEM. 1. Al Ghurair STEM Scholars Program – applicants who are displaced or have refugee status will receive special consideration when applying to the undergraduate and master’s degree scholarships at 10 partner universities in and outside the Arab region. They are also eligible for scholarships catered specifically to serve displaced/refugee youth at select universities. 2. Al Ghurair Open Learning Scholars Program – students can apply for a full scholarship for a range of online graduate credentials, also known as the MicroMasters, offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
